Tips
Plan Around Leave Promotion Deadlines
Companies must promote leave usage 6 months and 2 months before expiry. Knowing your expiry date helps you plan ahead.
Best Practices
Track Leave Usage in Real Time, Not Just at Year-End
Many employees only check their remaining leave balance when planning a vacation or approaching year-end. By that point, it may be too late to use all entitled days before they expire. Set a quarterly reminder to review your leave balance using this calculator. Knowing your exact remaining days at each quarter gives you time to plan usage and avoid forfeiture.
Understand How the Fiscal-Year Transition Affects Your Balance
If your company switches from hire-date to fiscal-year basis (or vice versa), the transition year often creates confusion about entitlement. During the transition, pro-rata calculations apply, which can result in fewer days than expected for that specific year. Run the calculator under both basis options to see the difference and raise any discrepancies with HR before the transition takes effect.
Document Half-Day Usage Carefully
Half-day leave (0.5 days) is increasingly common but often poorly tracked. Some companies round down when tallying half-day usage, causing employees to lose fractional days. Keep your own record of every half-day taken, including dates, and periodically reconcile with your company’s attendance system. This calculator’s half-day tracking feature helps you maintain an independent count.
FAQ
What’s the difference between hire-date and fiscal-year basis?
Hire-date basis accrues leave on each employee’s anniversary; fiscal-year basis grants leave on January 1 (or a company-set date) each year. Transitioning requires pro-rata calculation.
Does parental leave affect annual leave accrual?
Parental leave periods are treated as days worked, so annual leave accrual is unaffected.
What happens to unused leave when I resign?
Under Korean labor law, any unused annual leave at the time of resignation must be compensated as unused leave allowance. The payment is calculated as your daily ordinary wage multiplied by the number of remaining leave days. This calculator includes an unused leave allowance estimation feature — enter your planned resignation date to see both your remaining balance and the expected monetary compensation.
How does the additional leave for long tenure work?
Starting from the third year of continuous employment, employees earn one additional leave day for every two completed years of service, on top of the base 15 days. This means 16 days at year 3, 17 days at year 5, and so on, capping at 25 days total. The calculator automatically factors in your tenure to show the correct entitlement, including these long-service bonus days.
